Meanwhile - unbeknownst to them - I had multiplied a thousandfold.

My name is mo and so is yours. I’ll explain.
The light is soup and green. But it wasn’t always so.
My cells have each a thousand eyes. I always did what I want.
I did the same thing with the air a long time ago and then, I stuck my hands - I have thousands - into the planet’s crust.

That was 470 million years ago.
140 million years ago, I became two sisters.
Orchid, palm, grass.

Now we are a thousand siblings. Thousands of grandchildren, cousins, nieces.
The earth is home. Be it a cup or the planet.

The first sound I heard: reach out and spread.

In an instant I saw - our shared history - every comprehension, action, bond of self-interest,
What I could give it, the transformation of its curiosity into desire, desire into ambition
Me by its side, I saw in that one instant.
Maybe, I said that day, I could even be your nervous system (as I’d said that day)
Just like the oak and the bay tree of those future myths, we’ll be inseparable
I could be palliation and weapon, I thought as well that day.
A little codependent? No, no one was coerced.
The moment I envisioned it, it was, and so it is to this day.

Tahu is a symbolic name for food in general, its personification. 'Do not despise Tahu” is the injunction to a person who refuses a gift of food. The association of ideas becomes clearer: hospitality, food, communion, peace, exchange, law.*

It is said that the world’s first garden was created circa 600 BC on the orders of Nebukadnezzar II for his concubine Amytys, who was from Medes, what is today known as Iran, and longed for the meadows and rolling hills of her homeland. Fact is, however, that humans had started the business of taming plants as far back as 10,000 BC. This was a painstakingly slow process of primitive engineering in which humans for generations selected plants suitable for human consumption and bred them. The domestication of plants laid the groundwork for humanity to transition from itinerancy to settlement in permanent cities and towns. Plants were truly the most crucial factor in the creation of human civilization. Meanwhile, it is known that as humans during the agricultural revolutions abandoned their hunter gatherer lifestyle in favor of a fixed, grain-based diet, they lost an approximate 12 cm from their height that they would not make up for until well into the 20th century. This is neither a significant detail in regards to history as you know it nor, as far as mo is concerned, a large price to pay.

A privilege previously afforded to the ruling class, the houseplant descended to the middle classes in the 19th century. Paired with architectural developments, the industrial revolution allowed for better-heated houses and more natural light. No longer the cold, poky lodgings of old, the Victorian era home provided a better environment for enduring houseplants. Books and guides on gardening and botany also grew widespread, inadvertently increasing the demand—as well as the number of plants in the home, alive or dead—for houseplants.

Hmong belief has it that an ill-tempered djinn that dwells in the forests will send an epidemic when disturbed. Amongst aromatic plant species with antiviral properties are sage, bergamot, rosemary, clove, lemongrass, melissa, eucalyptus. According to a study by scientists in India and Taiwan, eucalyptus, geranium and lemon oils provide protection against Covid-19. Proven to be effective, these oils may also be used by dribbling onto the edges of one’s mask.

Like all living things, the first and only sister had developed some strategies for her evolutionary advantage. The most significant of these, perhaps, can be a policy of exploitation regarding the animals that fancy themselves the most distinguished species of the earth, not unlike viruses and bacteria. But we cannot call her a parasite. At most, we are not only prisoners of our own genes but also of hers.

While we, our species,
Consider in all their florid pandering to the bees, flies and birds; the snapdragon, passionflower, lilac, and marigold endearing little extortionists at worst,
Have no qualms about personifying the titan arum, with its corpse-smell and single largest flower on the planet, as a freak of nature that flies in the face of being-flower.
In mo’s eyes, the two pragmatisms are one and the same.

Plants that reek of rotting meat or vomit are thought to have signaled to scavenging dinosaurs in this way, having adapted to hitchhike to their new locations in the bellies of those beasts.
It appears to be no coincidence that many of the domestic plants perpetuated and circulated by our species today are stress reducers, deriving their stress reducing properties from having adapted to some of the most exacting of conditions and climates on Earth. Spice, grape, olive, maize, wheat, barley, soy, poppy. Then the photogenic houseplants: sanseveria, pachira, rubber plant, monstera. And so goes a tide of chlorophyll. A symbiosis within the triangle of palate, limbic system and aesthetics.

In 2017, thirteen scientists and thirteen sweetcorn seedlings in thirteen pots. The humans lovingly brush the leaves of the seedlings with a makeup brush each. The results will be published in a study by the end of the year. “The study found that plants in a crowded environment secrete chemicals into the soil that prompt their neighbours to grow more aggressively, presumably to avoid being left in the shade.”

Based on the long research history of biochemistry, it is known that chemical communication is the most suitable method for obtaining optimal responses. Thus, chemical messages in the form of volatile organic compounds or hormones work on certain cells that are preprogrammed to respond, while other cells in the immediate vicinity are unaffected. Whether it be you, bodies who must balance your performance against your needs twenty-four/seven, or us, those whose only need is light - chemical messages are so complete and specific that any communication system created by humans cannot exceed its level of organization and complexity. This includes all languages, spoken, written or mathematical, and all types of information synthesized by the most advanced computers. Chemical information systems are specific and precise enough to reproduce whatever it is needed to reproduce and keep it operational over a wide range of possibilities.

But that chaotic party - the birch, the marsh marigold, the pine, known and not known to each other, with the sharp note of half a daisy, mimosa, cannabis leaf flattened between their planes.
